Aircraft Technical Overview
Reconnaissance Nose Configuration
The RF-4 variants feature a completely redesigned nose assembly replacing the fighter's radar with a multi-sensor reconnaissance package. The elongated nose houses optical cameras (forward oblique, vertical, and side oblique), infrared linescan sensors, and side-looking airborne radar (SLAR). Early RF-4s used a chined nose profile; later variants adopted a rounded nose to minimize wave drag above Mach 1.2. Optical-grade camera windows required specific aerodynamic treatment to eliminate boundary-layer separation and camera vibration during high-speed reconnaissance runs.
Powerplant
The RF-4B and RF-4C are powered by twin General Electric J79-GE-15 turbojets (10,300 lbs dry / 17,000 lbs with afterburner). The RF-4E uses the uprated J79-GE-17 (11,870 lbs dry / 17,900 lbs with afterburner). Both variants use automated variable-ramp intake systems controlled by the Air Data Computer to decelerate supersonic intake air to approximately Mach 0.5 at the compressor face. Auxiliary air doors supplement static air mass flow during high-power, low-airspeed takeoff regimes.

Stability & Handling
Because the RF-4 flew unarmed, straight-and-level photographic runs at low altitude and high speed, its stability boundary conditions were extensively documented. The AFCS stability augmentation system (SAS) stabilizes all three axes to provide a steady sensor platform. AOA is read in arbitrary cockpit units (0–30): optimum approach at 19.2 units, pedal shaker at 22.3 units, aerodynamic stall between 26–30 units. Abrupt roll commands at high AOA risk severe inertial coupling and unrecoverable directional divergence.
