The Martin P4M Mercator was one of the most technically ambitious maritime patrol aircraft ever built — a mixed-propulsion platform combining two Pratt & Whitney R-4360 Wasp Major radial engines with two Allison J33 auxiliary turbojets, all sharing a single unified fuel system. Only 21 aircraft were produced, making surviving primary-source documentation exceptionally rare. Online Aviation Library has assembled the core surviving technical record for both the airframe and its powerplants.
What This Collection Covers
Airframe Flight Handbooks
- NAVAER 01-35EH-501 — Pilot's Handbook, Navy Model P4M-1 Aircraft (1 May 1951) — supersedes NAVAER 01-35EH-501 dated 15 June 1950, revised 1 December 1950. Originally marked RESTRICTED; now declassified.
- NAVAER 01-35EH-502 — Handbook Erection and Maintenance Instructions, Navy Model P4M-1Q Aircraft (1 March 1955, Revised 1 March 1956)
- Standard Aircraft Characteristics — P4M-1Q "Mercator" (1 February 1952) — declassified performance data sheet covering dimensions, weights, speed, range, and powerplant specifications
Engine Technical Documentation — Allison J33 Series
The P4M's auxiliary turbojets were Allison J33-A-10 units, modified to burn Avgas alongside the radial engines from a single unified fuel system. This collection includes the primary overhaul and service documentation for the J33 family:
- T.O. 2J-J33-23 — Handbook Overhaul Instructions, Model J33-A-33 and J33-A-33A Aircraft Engine (1 December 1954, Revised 1 April 1958) — supersedes T.O. 2J-J33-23C and 2J-J33-23D
- AN 02B-105BB-2 — Handbook Service Instructions, Models J33-A-10A and -20 Aircraft Engines (1 December 1956) — published under authority of the Chief of the Bureau of Aeronautics
- Allison J-33 Service School Training Manual (Preliminary) — Allison Division, General Motors Corporation, Indianapolis — factory training manual covering engine theory, systems, and servicing procedures
Aerodynamic & Handling Studies
- Variable airfoil profiles: inboard section optimized for structural strength around the massive engine nacelles; outboard section minimized drag and maximized high-speed roll authority
- Shoulder-wing configuration maintaining excellent lift efficiency and clean airflow during prolonged, heavily-loaded maritime patrols
- Vertical stabilizer offset from fuselage centerline to counteract immense rotational torque from the 4-bladed constant-speed propellers
- NATC flight test records confirming stable single-engine handling — safe flight sustained with one nacelle completely shut down on either the radial or auxiliary jet alone
Performance Data (NATC Baseline)
- Maximum speed: over 350 mph (304 kt) at altitude, all four engines engaged
- Cruising speed: 200 mph (174 kt) on radial engines only
- Maximum takeoff weight: 92,500 lbs
- Combat radius: approximately 3,000 miles — extended SIGINT/ELINT patrol operations
