Historical Note

The Macchi M.B.308 — affectionately nicknamed Macchino — is a post-WWII Italian light touring and training aircraft designed by Ermanno Bazzocchi. Its development was pivotal in the revitalization of the Italian civil aviation industry following the war. The first flight occurred on January 19, 1947, and the type quickly gained recognition for its sleek lines, all-wood construction (in early models), and cantilever high-wing design.

Powered initially by a 60 HP CNA engine, production variants later adopted the Continental C85 and C90 air-cooled flat-four engines, giving the aircraft a maximum speed of 197 km/h and a range of 760 km. The MB-308 served Italian flying clubs extensively, with a seaplane floatplane variant (MB.308 Idro) also produced. A later variant, the MB.308G, was produced and exported to Argentina, where some examples were further modified with Fairchild M.62 wings and alternative powerplants.

The type is remembered as a responsive yet forgiving trainer, well-suited to smaller airfields, and a participant in European touring races of the era. Surviving examples continue to fly today, preserved by enthusiasts across Italy and South America.
