Historical Note

The Supermarine Spitfire stands as one of aviation's most iconic fighter designs, serving as the RAF's primary interceptor throughout World War II and beyond. The late-war variants (Mk.XI through Mk.XXIV) represented the pinnacle of Spitfire development, incorporating progressively more powerful Rolls-Royce Griffon engines, enhanced armament, and refined aerodynamics. The photo-reconnaissance Mk.XI served with distinction from 1942, while the Mk.XIV introduced the Griffon 65 engine and five-blade propeller. The final production variants—Mk.XVIII, Mk.21, and Mk.24—featured strengthened airframes, increased fuel capacity, and improved high-altitude performance. Over 20,000 Spitfires were produced across all variants, with these late-war models serving in combat through 1945 and remaining in RAF service into the 1950s. Today, surviving examples remain prized warbirds and museum centerpieces worldwide.
