Aircraft & Engineering Background

The Sukhoi Su-7 (NATO: Fitter-A) is a swept-wing supersonic fighter-bomber developed in the 1950s by the Sukhoi OKB. Its airframe was engineered around a TsAGI SR-3S airfoil with a 62° leading-edge sweep, a wing area of 34 m², and a thickness-to-chord ratio of 5.9% at root / 4.7% at tip. The nose-mounted translating inlet cone automatically managed shockwave positioning above Mach 1.

Power was provided by the Lyulka AL-7F-1 single-shaft afterburning turbojet — 66.6 kN dry / up to 98.1 kN in full afterburner — with a 9-stage axial compressor and 18-burner annular combustion chamber. The Su-7BKŁ variant added two SPRD-110 JATO solid-fuel rocket boosters (29.4 kN each) for short-field operations, and combination wheel-ski landing gear for unpaved frontline strips.

Flight controls are fully hydraulically boosted with no aerodynamic feedback — artificial-feel systems were required. The all-moving stabilator retained pitch authority in supersonic flow. Landing approach speed of 280–300 km/h demanded long concrete runways, a limitation addressed by the BKŁ's JATO and ski-gear upgrades.
