Note on the Collection: This is the same engine under different company names over time. In 1926 the engine division became Siemens Flugmotorenwerk, marketed under the Siemens-Halske name. In the early 1930s the company became Siemens Apparate und Maschinen (SAM), and the engine designation changed to SAM 322. In 1936 it was sold and renamed Brandenburgische Motorenwerke (Bramo). In 1939 it was acquired by BMW. In the following index, it is specified when the manuals were originally published under a different designation — SAM 22, Bramo 322, or Bramo/BMW 322.

About the Siemens-Halske Sh 22 / SAM 322 / Bramo 322

Historical Background

First introduced in 1930 by Siemens & Halske, the Sh 22 was derived from the British Bristol Jupiter IV nine-cylinder radial, which Siemens licensed to build in 1929. It evolved directly via the localized German-dimensioned Sh 20 and Sh 21 prototype designs. Primary military applications included the Heinkel He 50, the Junkers W 34 (hi variant), and early prototypes of the Dornier Do 19 heavy bomber. Production ran from 1930 to the mid-1930s, when the engine was phased out in favour of its successor. Despite persistent reliability problems that limited its operational impact, the Sh 22 / SAM 322 served as a critical engineering stepping stone toward more mature German radial designs. The engine was completely obsolete and out of production long before the end of WWII.

Current Status

The Sh 22 / SAM 322 / Bramo 322 is no longer flying. No active Type Certificate holder exists — the underlying manufacturing assets evolved into Bramo, were acquired by BMW in 1939, and the original type certificate has long since lapsed. No active Service Bulletins or Airworthiness Directives apply. The engine survives today solely as static museum displays and archival cutaways.
