Historical Note

The SIAI Marchetti SF-260 represents one of the most successful and enduring military trainer aircraft designs in aviation history. Originally conceived by renowned Italian aircraft designer Stelio Frati in the late 1950s as the F.250, the design was refined and put into production by SIAI Marchetti (later Aermacchi) as the SF-260 in 1964. The aircraft's elegant lines, exceptional aerobatic capabilities, and robust construction made it an instant success.

Powered by a Lycoming O-540 piston engine producing 260 horsepower, the SF-260 featured all-metal construction, retractable tricycle landing gear, and tandem seating under a bubble canopy that provided excellent visibility. The aircraft's low-wing configuration and responsive controls delivered fighter-like handling characteristics while maintaining docile flight behavior suitable for ab-initio training. Its +6/-3G aerobatic capability allowed it to perform the full range of military aerobatic maneuvers.

The SF-260 achieved remarkable international success, serving with over 30 air forces worldwide as a primary trainer, aerobatic trainer, and light attack aircraft. Major military operators included Italy, Belgium, Ireland, Libya, Tunisia, Zimbabwe, the Philippines, and numerous other nations across Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Americas. The SF-260M military trainer variant became the backbone of primary flight training programs, while the SF-260W Warrior light attack version, equipped with underwing hardpoints for weapons and external stores, demonstrated the design's versatility in counter-insurgency and light strike roles.

The SF-260TP turboprop variant, introduced in the 1980s with an Allison 250 turbine engine, offered jet-like performance and operating characteristics while maintaining the SF-260's renowned handling qualities. This variant found favor with air forces seeking to bridge the gap between piston-engine primary trainers and jet advanced trainers.

Beyond military service, the SF-260 found success in the civilian market as a high-performance aerobatic and cross-country aircraft. Its combination of speed (cruising at 180 mph), range (over 700 miles), and handling made it popular with private owners and aerobatic competition pilots. The aircraft's reliability and relatively low operating costs contributed to its widespread adoption in both military and civilian roles.

Production continued for over 50 years, with more than 900 SF-260s built between 1964 and the 2010s—an extraordinary achievement for a piston-engine trainer in the jet age. The aircraft remained in production longer than many jet trainers, testament to its enduring design excellence and operational effectiveness. Many air forces continue operating SF-260s today, with ongoing upgrade programs ensuring the type remains relevant for primary and advanced training roles.

The SF-260's legacy includes its influence on military pilot training worldwide and its reputation as one of the finest handling piston-engine aircraft ever built. Stelio Frati's elegant design continues to inspire aviation enthusiasts, and the sight of an SF-260 performing aerobatics remains a highlight at air shows around the world. These original technical manuals represent the authentic documentation used throughout the aircraft's distinguished service life across multiple continents and decades of operation.
