Historical Note

The Savoia Marchetti S.55 stands as one of aviation's most distinctive and innovative designs. Designed by Alessandro Marchetti and first flown in 1924, the S.55 featured a revolutionary twin-hulled catamaran configuration with the engines mounted in tandem on a central pylon above the wing. This unconventional layout provided exceptional stability on water and remarkable long-range capability. The S.55 achieved international fame through General Italo Balbo's mass formation flights, including the spectacular 1933 transatlantic cruise when 24 S.55X aircraft flew from Italy to Chicago for the World's Fair, covering over 6,000 miles and demonstrating Italian aviation prowess to the world. Between 1924 and 1935, approximately 200 S.55 aircraft were produced in various configurations for military reconnaissance, maritime patrol, and long-distance record attempts. The type set numerous distance and endurance records, and its distinctive silhouette became a symbol of the golden age of flying boats. Today, surviving S.55 examples are treasured museum exhibits representing the bold innovation of interwar Italian aviation engineering.
