Andersson at SAAB's Linköping facility as a private venture to meet the growing demand for modern training aircraft in the postwar period.

Originally conceived as a three-seat touring and training aircraft, the Safir evolved through several variants. The initial SAAB 91A was followed by the improved 91B with a more powerful de Havilland Gipsy Major 10 engine, the 91C with further refinements, and the definitive 91D featuring a 190 hp Lycoming O-435 engine that became the most widely produced version. The Swedish Air Force adopted the type as the Sk 50, where it served with distinction as a primary trainer for decades.

What made the Safir exceptional was its combination of docile handling characteristics, robust construction, and elegant design. The aircraft featured a low-wing configuration with excellent visibility, responsive controls that were forgiving to student pilots yet precise enough for advanced training, and a rugged airframe that could withstand the rigors of ab-initio flight instruction. Its reliability and pleasant flying qualities earned it an outstanding reputation among instructors and students alike.

Beyond Sweden, the Safir achieved remarkable international success. It was manufactured under license in the Netherlands by De Schelde and operated by air forces and civilian flying schools across Europe, Africa, and beyond. Countries including Austria, Ethiopia, Finland, Norway, Tunisia, and many others selected the Safir for their training programs. Total production exceeded 320 aircraft between 1946 and 1966, an impressive achievement for a Swedish design in the competitive postwar market.

The Safir's postwar civilian popularity was equally notable. Private owners and flying clubs appreciated its economical operation, comfortable cabin, and cross-country capability. The aircraft became a favorite for touring and recreational flying throughout Europe, with many examples remaining airworthy and cherished by enthusiasts today.

In Swedish Air Force service, the Sk 50 trained generations of military pilots from the late 1940s through the 1990s, providing fundamental flight instruction before students progressed to jet trainers. Its longevity in service—spanning nearly five decades—testifies to the soundness of the original design and the aircraft's enduring utility.
