The British Phantom — A Distinct Aircraft
The Phantom II FG Mk 1 (F-4K) and FGR Mk 2 (F-4M) are not simply licence-built American aircraft. The integration of the Rolls-Royce Spey RB168-25R bypass turbofan — in place of the General Electric J79 — mandated a fundamental redesign of the rear fuselage, intake geometry, and structural architecture. The result was an aircraft that shared the Phantom's airframe lineage but demanded its own dedicated documentation series, issued under the authority of the UK Ministry of Defence Defence Council.
