Historical Note
The North American SNJ series represents one of the most important aircraft in U.S. naval aviation history. As the Navy and Marine Corps variant of the legendary T-6 Texan, the SNJ trained virtually every American naval aviator from the early 1940s through the 1950s and beyond. The designation "SNJ" stood for Scout-Trainer built by North American ("J" being North American's manufacturer code), and these rugged, reliable trainers prepared pilots for carrier operations and combat flying during WWII, Korea, and into the jet age.
The SNJ-3 introduced the famous "greenhouse" canopy, the SNJ-4 featured a 24-volt electrical system and metal-skinned wings, the SNJ-5 incorporated the R-1340-AN-1 engine with improved performance, and the SNJ-6 represented the final production variant with further refinements. Over 15,000 SNJ aircraft served with the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps, with thousands more exported to allied nations. Today, hundreds of SNJ aircraft remain airworthy, beloved by warbird enthusiasts and still used for advanced training and aerobatic displays.
