Morane-Saulnier MS.406 — Primary-Source Technical Archive

France's most numerous fighter at the outbreak of the Battle of France, the Morane-Saulnier MS.406 stood at the crossroads between the biplane era and the modern monoplane fighter. Aerodynamic & Structural Design

  • Wing Construction: Two-spar metal structure with duralumin skin and fabric covering — weight-optimised for the period.
  • Plymax Fuselage: Forward section in Plymax (aluminium sheet bonded to okoumé plywood) — exceptional rigidity and stress tolerance.
  • Rear Section: Light duralumin framework covered in doped fabric — a documented vulnerability against incendiary rounds.
  • Retractable Radiator: Unique ventral water-cooled radiator retracting into the fuselage to minimise drag during combat dives.

Engine Technical Notes
