Mitsubishi Ki-46 “Dinah” Manuals Collection

A compact historical reference collection covering the Mitsubishi Ki-46 Type 100 “Dinah,” the elegant Japanese Army strategic reconnaissance aircraft developed for speed, range, and low aerodynamic drag.

Engine technical notes and propulsion

The Ki-46 developed through several engine configurations as the design was adapted for high-altitude reconnaissance:

  • Mitsubishi Ha-102, Ki-46-II: twin 14-cylinder, two-row, air-cooled radial engines, reported at approximately 1,080 hp each.
  • Mitsubishi Ha-112-II, Ki-46-III: upgraded direct fuel-injection engines, reported at approximately 1,500 hp each.
  • Ejector exhaust: wartime modifications replaced the conventional collector arrangement with individual ejector pipes. Historical notes associate the change with an increase in top speed of roughly 12 km/h.
  • Ki-46-IV prototypes: the late-war Ha-112-II Ru installation is described with exhaust-driven turbo-supercharging and water-methanol injection for improved high-altitude performance.

Handling and stability studies

Historical flight-test and engineering notes describe stable high-altitude cruise characteristics alongside operational limitations. At extreme altitudes, aileron response and elevator authority could become less effective. The landing-gear struts were also reported as vulnerable to snapping or buckling during hard landings on rough forward airfields, even after reinforcing changes. Later production aircraft incorporated modest stabilizer-area changes associated with pitch stability.

Reported Ki-46-III performance figures

Post-war testing and intelligence evaluations reported the following approximate figures for the Ki-46-III, with results varying by aircraft condition, fuel, configuration, and test method:

  • Maximum speed: approximately 630 km/h at 6,000 m, with some reports of up to 684 km/h using high-octane fuel.
  • Cruising speed: approximately 400 km/h.
  • Service ceiling: approximately 10,500 m.
  • Maximum range: approximately 4,000 km with full internal and wing-tank capacity.
  • Climb: approximately 17 minutes 58 seconds to 8,000 m in the cited test data.

Engineering bulletins and combat conversions

As the strategic situation changed, historical engineering notes describe Ki-46-III KAI conversion work intended to provide a limited defensive-interceptor capability. The reported changes included reduced forward fuel capacity, reintroduction of a stepped nose to accommodate two forward-firing 20 mm Ho-5 cannon, and an obliquely mounted 37 mm Ho-203 cannon in the upper fuselage. These conversions were reported to suffer from reduced climb performance, limiting their usefulness against high-altitude bomber formations.
