Mitsubishi Ki-1 — Army Type 93 Heavy Bomber
The Mitsubishi Ki-1 (Army Type 93 Heavy Bomber) was an early 1930s twin-engine Japanese bomber — a scaled-up derivative of the German Junkers K 37 design, retaining the signature corrugated-skin, low-wing cantilever monoplane architecture of the Junkers lineage. A total of 118 airframes were manufactured by Mitsubishi between March 1933 and April 1936. The type saw brief front-line service before being deemed fully obsolete by 1937 and withdrawn from service by 1938. Very little archival documentation survived the destruction of military records at the end of World War II.

Aerodynamic Profile & Configuration
- Design Lineage: Scaled up approximately 30% from the German Junkers K 37. Retained the angular, corrugated-skin aesthetic of classical Junkers aircraft.
- Wing Configuration: Low-wing cantilever monoplane. Wing panels lacked modern aerodynamic fairings, resulting in high parasitic drag.
- Empennage: Double-fin and twin-rudder tail assembly for directional stability behind the wide fuselage profile.
- Landing Gear: Entirely fixed and non-retractable main undercarriage — a significant aerodynamic penalty on cruise velocity.
Engine Technical Notes
- Variant I Powerplant: Two Mitsubishi Ha-2-2 V-12 water-cooled engines, 940 hp (701 kW) each at takeoff.
- Variant II Powerplant: Upgraded to Mitsubishi Ha-2-3 water-cooled engines, 970 hp (723 kW) each — introduced to address the chronic underpowered performance of the Variant I.
- Operational Defects: The Ha-2 series became notorious within the Imperial Japanese Army Air Force for extreme mechanical unreliability.
Handling and Stability Summary
- Power-to-Weight Deficiency: Severely underpowered for its large bulk. Flight evaluations revealed sluggish control response across all three axes.
- Single-Engine Control Failure: Asymmetric thrust on engine failure could not be safely countered. The remaining engine could not maintain altitude, frequently forcing emergency landings or resulting in airframe loss.
- Defensive Stations: Tandem cockpit canopy, semi-enclosed nose and dorsal turrets, and a retractable ventral "dustbin" turret to minimise drag when not in use.
Historical Disposition
- Production run: 118 airframes, March 1933 – April 1936.
- Deemed fully obsolete by 1937. The Imperial Japanese Army hastily procured Italian-made Fiat BR.20 bombers as a stopgap until the Mitsubishi Ki-21 entered full service.
