1. Aerodynamic Configuration
- 35-degree swept-back wings with modified high-chord ailerons requiring structural stiffening against wing twist
- Initial V-tail design abandoned after wind-tunnel instability findings; replaced with conventional mid-mounted tailplane
- Severe nose-down pitch (tucking under) and aileron effectiveness loss at high Mach numbers due to span loading shifts
2. Engine & Airframe Integration
- Two Westinghouse turbojets mounted side-by-side in the lower-mid fuselage with wing-root air intakes
- XF-88: Non-afterburning J34-WE-13 (3,000 lbf each) — deemed underpowered
- XF-88A: Short-afterburning J34-WE-15 (3,600 lbf each) — +34% baseline thrust
- Spring-loaded blow-in auxiliary intake doors added to combat S-duct choking on takeoff
3. Handling, Stability & NACA Flight Research
- XF-88A introduced an all-moving stabilator for transonic longitudinal authority
- Speed brake deployment restricted at high speed due to severe aft-fuselage buffeting
- Roll rate improved 26% via chord expansion; wingtip fuel tanks degraded high-alpha maneuverability
- XF-88B Propeller Testbed: First prototype fitted with a nose-mounted 2,500 shp Allison XT38 turboprop; evaluated supersonic propeller blades at NACA Langley through 1956, achieving Mach 1.0+ in dives

5. Engineering Legacy
- Program canceled 1950 due to shifting USAF tactical budgets and high afterburner fuel consumption
- Structural blueprints and flight test data directly informed the design of the supersonic McDonnell F-101 Voodoo
- Staggered wing-root intake and belly exhaust scheme later applied to the F3H Demon and F-4 Phantom II
