Aerodynamic Configuration

The F-4J retains the core Phantom II aerodynamic architecture — 45° swept wing with 12° wingtip dihedral and 23° anhedral all-moving stabilator — with two key improvements over the F-4B: a slotted stabilator for increased low-speed pitch authority, and drooped ailerons for improved roll control at high angles of attack. Boundary Layer Control (BLC) uses high-pressure engine bleed air over leading and trailing edge flaps to enhance lift coefficients during carrier approaches.

Powerplant — General Electric J79-GE-10

Twin J79-GE-10 axial-flow turbojets, each delivering 11,810 lbs dry thrust and 17,900 lbs with afterburner. Visually distinguished by extended afterburner variable ejector leaves — the “turkey feathers” — which improve afterburner efficiency and reduce infrared signature. Variable stator compressors and a VEN mechanically operated by engine oil pressure minimize EGT spiking during afterburner transitions.

Stability & Handling

Three-axis analog Stability Augmentation System (SAS) provides artificial damping to correct high-altitude adverse yaw and Dutch roll oscillations. Primary roll and yaw transitions via trailing-edge ailerons coupled with upper-surface wing spoilers. Spin recoveries demand strict neutral control configurations due to high inertial coupling along the fuselage axis.
