Historical Context

The McDonnell F-4 Phantom II entered U.S. Navy service in 1961 as the F4H-1, redesignated F-4B under the 1962 Tri-Service designation system. Powered by two General Electric J79-GE-8 afterburning turbojets producing 17,000 lbf each in full afterburner, the F-4B was the definitive early-production carrier variant — the aircraft that defined U.S. naval air superiority through the early years of the Vietnam War. The RF-4B brought the airframe into the tactical reconnaissance role, while the F-4J introduced the AWG-10 pulse-Doppler radar and improved J79-GE-10 engines. The F-4N was a mid-life structural and avionics upgrade of surviving F-4B airframes, extending fleet service into the late 1970s.

These six documents span the full operational life of the early Phantom II variants — from the original 1962 NATOPS manuals through the 1971–1972 consolidated F-4B/N edition and the 1965 structural repair authority. Together they represent the primary-source operational and maintenance record of one of the most significant carrier aircraft of the Cold War era.
