Historical Background

Designed by Ed Heinemann at Douglas Aircraft and first flown in 1954, the A-4 Skyhawk was a masterpiece of lightweight engineering — it came in under half the specified weight and required no wing folding mechanism thanks to its small delta wing. It served continuously with the US Navy and Marines from 1956 through the 1990s, seeing combat in Vietnam, and remained in frontline service with export operators well into the 2000s. Over 2,960 aircraft were built across all variants.
