P4M Mercator Banner 1 — Over Water

The Martin P4M Mercator was one of the most technically ambitious maritime patrol aircraft ever built — a mixed-propulsion platform combining two Pratt & Whitney R-4360 Wasp Major radial engines with two Allison J33 auxiliary turbojets, all sharing a single unified fuel system. Only 21 aircraft were produced, making surviving primary-source documentation exceptionally rare. Engine Technical Documentation — Allison J33 Series

The P4M's auxiliary turbojets were Allison J33-A-10 units, modified to burn Avgas alongside the radial engines from a single unified fuel system. This collection includes the primary overhaul and service documentation for the J33 family:

  • Variable airfoil profiles: inboard section optimized for structural strength around the massive engine nacelles; outboard section minimized drag and maximized high-speed roll authority
  • Shoulder-wing configuration maintaining excellent lift efficiency and clean airflow during prolonged, heavily-loaded maritime patrols
  • Vertical stabilizer offset from fuselage centerline to counteract immense rotational torque from the 4-bladed constant-speed propellers
  • NATC flight test records confirming stable single-engine handling — safe flight sustained with one nacelle completely shut down on either the radial or auxiliary jet alone
