Historical Significance
The Lockheed Loadestar emerged in 1939 as a larger, more powerful evolution of the Model 10 Electra and Model 14 Super Electra. Designed to compete in the growing commercial airliner market, the Loadestar featured a lengthened fuselage accommodating up to 18 passengers and more powerful Wright R-1820 Cyclone engines.
When World War II began, the Loadestar's reliability and performance caught the attention of military planners. The U.S. Army Air Forces adopted it under multiple designations—C-56, C-57, C-59, and C-60—while the Navy operated it as the R50. These military variants served with distinction in every theater of the war, performing cargo transport, personnel movement, VIP transport, and navigation training missions.
Over 625 Loadestars were built between 1939 and 1944, with approximately 325 serving in military roles. After the war, surplus military Loadestars found new life in commercial service, bush operations, and corporate aviation. The aircraft's rugged construction, excellent short-field performance, and spacious cabin made it a favorite among operators worldwide well into the 1970s.
