The Interstate Cadet, designed in the late 1930s, was a popular two-seat light aircraft that found success in both civilian and military roles. When the United States entered World War II, the Army Air Forces recognized the Cadet's excellent handling characteristics, reliability, and economical operation, designating it as the L-6 Grasshopper for liaison and observation duties.

The L-6 served with distinction throughout WWII in training roles and as a liaison aircraft, carrying officers, delivering messages, and performing artillery spotting missions across multiple theaters of operation. Its gentle flight characteristics made it an ideal trainer for introducing pilots to tailwheel aircraft operations.
