Historical Note

The Fokker F-27 Friendship stands as one of the most successful European commercial aircraft programs of the post-war era and represents the rebirth of the Dutch aviation industry after World War II. Designed in the early 1950s to replace the aging Douglas DC-3 on regional routes, the F-27 first flew on November 24, 1955, and entered airline service in 1958. It became the most successful turboprop airliner ever built, with 786 aircraft produced between 1955 and 1987.

The Friendship was a pioneering design that combined the reliability and economy of turboprop engines with modern pressurized comfort for passengers. Powered by two Rolls-Royce Dart turboprops, the F-27 could carry 40-52 passengers at speeds approaching 300 mph while operating economically from short runways and unprepared airstrips. This versatility made it ideal for regional airlines, commuter operations, and developing nations with limited airport infrastructure.

The aircraft achieved remarkable commercial success worldwide, serving with over 200 operators across six continents. Major airlines including Lufthansa, Air France, Ansett, and numerous U.S. regional carriers operated the type. In the United States, Fairchild Aircraft manufactured 206 F-27s under license as the Fairchild F-27 and FH-227, extending the aircraft's reach in the North American market. Military variants served with air forces around the world in transport, maritime patrol, and VIP roles, with some remaining in service into the 21st century.

The F-27's design proved so successful that it directly inspired Fokker's later F-50 turboprop and influenced regional aircraft design for decades. The type earned a reputation for ruggedness, reliability, and excellent short-field performance, operating in environments ranging from Arctic conditions to tropical jungles. Many F-27s remained in commercial service well into the 2000s, with some still flying today in cargo and specialized operations, a testament to the soundness of the original design. The Friendship's legacy lives on as a symbol of Dutch engineering excellence and as the aircraft that established Fokker as a major player in the post-war commercial aviation market.
