Historical Note
The Focke Wulf Fw44 Stieglitz stands as one of the most successful training aircraft ever built. Designed by Kurt Tank and first flown in 1932, this graceful biplane combined excellent flying characteristics with rugged construction and ease of maintenance—qualities that made it ideal for ab initio pilot training.
The Fw44 featured a welded steel tube fuselage covered in fabric, wooden wings with fabric covering, and a reliable inline or radial engine. Its docile handling, wide speed range, and forgiving stall characteristics made it perfect for student pilots. The aircraft could absorb the punishment of countless hard landings and training mishaps while remaining economical to operate and repair.
Production began in 1933 and continued through 1945, with over 2,000 aircraft built in Germany, Austria, Sweden, Brazil, Argentina, and other countries. The Luftwaffe used the Fw44 as its primary basic trainer throughout WWII. The type also served with air forces in Sweden (as the Sk 12), Switzerland, Austria, Bulgaria, Romania, China, and numerous South American nations.
The Fw44's export success stemmed from its reliability and versatility. It served not only as a trainer but also for aerobatic displays, glider towing, and liaison duties. Several examples remain airworthy today, prized by vintage aircraft enthusiasts for their beautiful lines and delightful flying qualities.
