The Aircraft

The Fieseler Fi 156 Storch is one of the most legendary aircraft of the Second World War — a masterpiece of STOL (Short Take-Off and Landing) engineering that has never been surpassed in its class. Designed in 1935 by Gerhard Fieseler, Reinhold Mewes, and Erich Bachem in response to a German Air Ministry requirement for a versatile liaison aircraft, the prototype Fi 156 V1 first flew on 24 May 1936. Its full-span leading-edge slats and large slotted flaps gave it a stall speed of just 50 km/h (31 mph) — allowing take-off in 45 m (150 ft) and landing in just 18 m (60 ft) with a slight headwind.

Generals including Erwin Rommel relied on the Storch daily for battlefield coordination and troop reconnaissance. Its most celebrated missions remain two of the most daring flights of the entire war: the 1943 Gran Sasso rescue of Benito Mussolini from a mountain-top prison, and test pilot Hanna Reitsch’s April 1945 landing near the Brandenburg Gate in besieged Berlin under heavy fire.

Approximately 2,900 were built between 1937 and 1949. Production was later licensed to Morane-Saulnier in France (M.S. 500 Criquet) and to Czechoslovakia (Mráz K-65 Čáp). Today, only approximately 4 original airworthy Fieseler-built examples survive worldwide, with an estimated 30 total flying examples including licensed variants. Authentic restored warbirds command between $450,000 and $600,000 on the open market — a direct reflection of their irreplaceable historical and engineering significance.
