Fiat G.59 — Primary-Source Documentation Archive
A curated archival collection of 12 original Italian Air Force technical publications covering the Fiat G.59 A and B fighter-trainer variants. Issued by the Ministero della Difesa Aeronautica and compiled by Fiat Aviazione / Fiat Sezione Aeritalia, these documents represent the complete operational, maintenance, and parts reference library for the G.59 airframe and its Rolls-Royce Merlin 500-20 powerplant.
Aircraft Overview
The Fiat G.59 is a post-WWII Italian advanced trainer designed by Giuseppe Gabrielli, adapted directly from the wartime G.55 Centauro airframe. The primary engineering modification replaced the original Daimler-Benz DB 605 engine with a Rolls-Royce Merlin 500-20 liquid-cooled V-12 — a conversion that reshaped the nose section to accommodate the Merlin's different physical dimensions and cooling architecture.
Aerodynamic Architecture
- Retained the clean, low-wing cantilever monoplane geometry of the G.55 Centauro
- Forward fuselage re-contoured to accommodate the upright Merlin V-12 and its cooling system
- Complex wing assembly: each wing rib requires 16 separate interlocking pieces; 4 spars per wing side
- Later production blocks (G.59-4A / 4B): cut-down rear fuselage with clear bubble canopy for improved all-round visibility
Engine Technical Notes — Rolls-Royce Merlin 500-20
- Type: Liquid-cooled V-12
- Performance: 1,440 hp – 1,660 hp depending on sub-variant and supercharger setting
- Supercharger: Mechanically driven, single-stage, two-speed centrifugal
- Propeller: 4-blade Fiat Hamilton 5010 hydromatic, variable-pitch duralumin — diameter 3,400 mm
Performance Data
| Parameter | Value |
|---|---|
| Maximum Speed | 609 km/h (320 kts) at 6,400 m |
| Cruising Speed | 460 km/h (248 kts) |
| Service Ceiling | 11,500 m – 12,100 m (38,000 ft) |
| Maximum Climb Rate | 2,870 ft/min (7,000 m in 8 min) |
| Maximum Range | 1,000 – 1,420 km (with auxiliary drop tanks) |
| MTOW | 3,460 – 3,600 kg |
Handling & Stability Notes
- The Merlin conversion functioned as a sidegrade rather than a pure performance upgrade — slightly altered centre of gravity compared to the DB 605-powered G.55
- Dual-seat configuration: student in front cockpit, instructor in rear (documented in C.A. 724/1)
- Structural monitoring required under high load factors — intensive aerobatic training maneuvers caused documented wing deformation; official Italian Air Force tracking data flagged structural limits
