Historical Note:

The Fairey Gannet was a British carrier-borne anti-submarine warfare aircraft that served with distinction in the Royal Navy from 1954 to 1978. Designed in response to the growing Soviet submarine threat during the Cold War, the Gannet featured an innovative contra-rotating propeller system powered by the Armstrong Siddeley Double Mamba turboprop engine—essentially two engines driving a single propeller shaft, allowing one engine to be shut down for extended loitering during submarine hunts.

The aircraft's distinctive design included a retractable "dustbin" radome housing the ASV.19 search radar, folding wings for carrier storage, and a crew of three (pilot, observer, and radar/sonar operator). The Gannet AS.1 and AS.4 variants excelled in anti-submarine roles, while the T.2 and T.5 served as trainers. Perhaps most distinctive was the AEW.3 variant, featuring a massive AN/APS-20 radar in an enormous ventral radome, which provided airborne early warning capabilities for Royal Navy carrier groups until 1978.

Beyond British service, Gannets operated with the Royal Australian Navy, the German Navy, and the Indonesian Navy. Today, several examples survive in museums worldwide, testament to this unique aircraft's engineering innovation and operational significance during a critical period of naval aviation history.
