Aircraft Technical Profile
Airframe & Wing Design
The Canberra uses a low aspect ratio (4.25) straight wing with a thick, symmetric RAE airfoil. The leading edge is constructed from a single sheet of light alloy wrapped to 40% chord, with Redux-bonded stiffeners maintaining an exact aerodynamic profile without external joints. Low wing loading delivers exceptional high-altitude maneuverability — during early flight testing, chief test pilot Roland Beamont demonstrated that the airframe remains fully controllable at Mach numbers up to M = 0.84, out-turning contemporary fighter aircraft at altitude. An electrically actuated variable-incidence tailplane provides precise longitudinal trim across the full speed and CG envelope. Initial flights revealed slight rudder over-balance, corrected by clipping the horn balance — producing the Canberra’s signature square-cut tail fin.
Powerplant — Rolls-Royce Avon Axial-Flow Turbojets
Two Rolls-Royce Avon single-shaft axial-flow turbojets buried in the wings at quarter-span. Early B.2 variants use the Avon Mk.101 (RA.3) producing 6,500 lbf static thrust; later PR.9 variants carry the Avon 206 series at up to 10,000 lbf. The combustion assembly uses 8 interconnected cannular chambers feeding a single or multi-stage turbine. The 12–15 stage axial compressor incorporates blow-off valves to prevent stalls during rapid throttle transitions. Engine starting uses a triple-breech cartridge system or electric starter for self-contained rapid ignition.
Handling & Stability
Early variants (B.2) lacked an automatic flight control system, requiring continuous manual handling. At ultra-high altitudes, a narrow speed bracket between stall and compressibility limits high-g maneuvers. Engine-out handling requires strict adherence to minimum control speeds (Vmca) due to the wide engine displacement from the fuselage centreline.
