The Douglas DC-6 entered airline service in 1947 as a pressurized, long-range development of the legendary DC-4. Designed to compete with the Lockheed Constellation, the DC-6 featured more powerful Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp engines, greater cabin pressurization, and improved range—making it ideal for transcontinental and transatlantic routes during the golden age of piston airliners.
The aircraft quickly became a workhorse for major carriers including United Airlines, American Airlines, and Pan American World Airways. Its reliability, passenger comfort, and economical operation made it one of the most successful airliners of its era, with over 700 examples built in various configurations including passenger, cargo, and convertible variants.
The U.S. military adopted the DC-6 in several versions: the C-118 Liftmaster for the Air Force and the R6D for the Navy and Marine Corps. These military variants served as VIP transports, cargo haulers, and medical evacuation aircraft throughout the 1950s and 1960s. The C-118 gained particular fame as a presidential transport, with several aircraft serving in the "Air Force One" role before the jet age.
Powered by four 2,500-horsepower radial engines and featuring a distinctive triple-fin tail, the DC-6 could carry up to 102 passengers or equivalent cargo over ranges exceeding 3,000 miles. The stretched DC-6B variant, introduced in 1951, became the most popular version with improved performance and capacity.
As jets replaced pistons on major routes in the 1960s, many DC-6s found second careers with smaller carriers, cargo operators, and specialty roles including aerial firefighting and Arctic operations. Some military C-118s remained in service until the 1970s, while civilian DC-6s continued flying freight and charter operations well into the 1990s.
Today, the DC-6 is remembered as one of the finest piston airliners ever built—a bridge between the DC-3 era and the coming jet age. Several examples remain airworthy with vintage aircraft operators and museums, preserving the sight and sound of four radial engines that once dominated the world's airways.
