Historical Note

The Douglas A-26 Invader, later redesignated B-26, stands as one of the most versatile and longest-serving American combat aircraft in history. First flown in July 1942, the Invader was designed as a fast, heavily-armed attack bomber to replace the A-20 Havoc and Douglas B-26 Marauder. Entering service in late 1944, it saw action in the final months of World War II in both the European and Pacific theaters.

What distinguished the Invader was its exceptional performance and adaptability. Powered by two Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp engines, it achieved speeds exceeding 350 mph while carrying up to 4,000 pounds of bombs. Its innovative design featured interchangeable nose sections—solid nose with eight .50-caliber machine guns for ground attack, or glass nose for precision bombing—allowing rapid mission reconfiguration.

The A-26's combat career spanned three wars. After WWII, it served extensively in Korea (1950-1953) and was recalled for Vietnam, where it flew counter-insurgency missions until 1969—a remarkable 25-year combat service record. The 1948 redesignation from A-26 to B-26 (after the Martin B-26 Marauder was retired) has caused historical confusion, but underscores the aircraft's transition from attack to bomber roles.

Beyond military service, many Invaders found civilian life as executive transports, fire bombers, and racing aircraft. Today, surviving examples are prized warbirds, celebrated for their sleek lines, powerful performance, and significant contribution to aviation history.
