Historical Note

The Bücker Bü 181 Bestmann stands as one of the finest training aircraft ever designed. Created by Swedish designer Anders J. Andersson at Bücker Flugzeugbau and first flown in 1939, this graceful low-wing monoplane became the Luftwaffe's standard advanced trainer during WWII and continued serving air forces and flying clubs worldwide for decades afterward.

The Bestmann featured a wooden wing structure with plywood covering, welded steel tube fuselage with fabric covering, and side-by-side seating that facilitated instruction. Powered by a Hirth HM 504 inline engine producing 105 hp, the aircraft offered docile handling, excellent visibility, and forgiving flight characteristics that made it ideal for training.

Over 4,000 Bestmanns were built during and after WWII in Germany, Czechoslovakia (as the C-6 and C-106), Egypt, and Sweden. The type served with the Luftwaffe, Swedish Air Force, Egyptian Air Force, and numerous civilian flying schools. Production continued in Czechoslovakia until 1950, and many examples remain airworthy today.

The Bü 181's reputation for delightful handling and beautiful lines has made it a treasured vintage aircraft. Pilots praise its light controls, stable flight characteristics, and forgiving nature. Several hundred examples survive, with many still flying at airshows and with private owners who appreciate its classic design and excellent flying qualities.
