Aerodynamic Reports & Design Notes
- Weight Growth: The prototype (XSB2A-1) gained approximately 3,000 lbs (1,400 kg) after addition of armor plate, self-sealing fuel tanks, and canopy redesign — severely penalizing wing loading and operational range.
- Visibility Restrictions: The large radial engine cowl reduced forward pilot visibility to near zero during deck operations and taxiing.
- Airframe Geometry: A 1 ft 2 in fuselage extension and tail fin modifications were mandated to recover marginal directional stability after removal of the intended rear power turret.
- Handling Verdict: Formally declared unfit for operational use by the RAF following evaluation at the Aeroplane and Armament Experimental Establishment (A&AEE), Boscombe Down. Restricted to secondary non-combat assignments.
