Boeing XF8B-1 Navy Fighter — Primary-Source Pilot's Manual Collection
The Boeing XF8B-1 was the largest and heaviest single-engine piston fighter ever developed for the U.S. Navy — and the last piston fighter Boeing would ever build. Conceived in 1943 to conduct long-range carrier-based strike missions against the Japanese home islands, the XF8B-1 was designed to perform five distinct combat roles simultaneously: fighter, dive bomber, torpedo bomber, level bomber, and close support aircraft. Only three prototypes were constructed before the post-war transition to jet aviation ended the programme. This collection preserves three primary-source pilot's manuals for the XF8B-1 — including the preliminary edition, the formal USN issued hardbound edition, and the Boeing factory document D-5850 — all RESTRICTED at time of issue and subsequently declassified.
Aerodynamic Design & Engineering
The XF8B-1 utilized a low-wing configuration with an optimized NACA laminar flow airfoil across its expansive 54-foot wingspan. The immense size and high torque of the R-4360 installation required a massive vertical stabilizer and rudder assembly directly adapted from Boeing's large bomber programmes — specifically a variation of the B-29 Superfortress tail fin geometry. Engine torque — a dangerous asymmetric roll tendency on takeoff in heavy piston fighters — was completely neutralized aerodynamically by coaxial contra-rotating propellers. Outer wing panels featured heavy-duty hydraulic folding mechanisms to accommodate carrier elevator and hangar deck dimensions.
Powerplant
The XF8B-1 was powered by a single Pratt & Whitney XR-4360-10 Wasp Major — a 28-cylinder, four-row air-cooled radial rated at 3,000 hp for takeoff and capable of 3,600 hp under War Emergency Power (WEP) with water injection. A dual-stage engine-driven supercharger with high-capacity induction intercooler maintained manifold pressure at altitude. Drive was via an Aeroproducts reduction gearbox turning two coaxial three-bladed contra-rotating propellers of 13 ft 6 in total diameter.

Armament & Weapons Systems
The XF8B-1 featured a fully enclosed internal bomb bay — unique for a fighter — minimizing parasitic drag while accommodating up to 6,400 lbs of internal/external ordnance or two 2,000 lb aerial torpedoes. Wing weapons bays were designed for interchangeable offensive packages: six 0.50-caliber machine guns or six 20 mm automatic cannons, mounted entirely within the folding wing panels. Fuel provisions included 395 gallons in main wing tanks, a 270-gallon auxiliary tank in the bomb bay, and up to 300 gallons in wing-mounted external drop tanks — enabling the extraordinary 2,400–2,800 nm ferry range.
