Boeing Pursuit Aircraft 1923–1935 — Primary-Source Technical Documentation Collection
This collection preserves the surviving original factory manuals and government technical orders for Boeing's foundational pursuit aircraft lineage — from the arc-welded steel-tube PW-9 of 1923 through the all-metal monoplane P-26A Peashooter of 1934. Spanning twelve years of rapid aeronautical evolution, these documents capture the transition from fabric-covered biplane fighters to the first production all-metal monoplane pursuit in U.S. service. All titles are preserved as issued by the Boeing Airplane Company, Seattle, and the U.S. Army Air Corps Materiel Division, Wright Field.

Aerodynamic & Engineering Context
The PW-9 and FB series established Boeing's foundational pursuit architecture: welded steel-tube fuselage, fabric-covered wings, and liquid-cooled Packard inline engines. Cooling system pressure-drop management and wire-bracing aerodynamic interference were primary engineering challenges of this generation. The transition to the P&W R-1340 Wasp radial in the F4B and P-12 families introduced Townend ring and NACA cowling evaluations to balance cylinder cooling efficiency against drag reduction. Lateral control studies on the F4B and P-12 analysed roll rate differentials between the tapered upper wing and untapered lower wing configurations. The P-26A represented the decisive break: all-metal semi-monocoque construction, low-wing monoplane layout, and externally braced wings — the last Boeing pursuit to retain wire bracing before the fully cantilever era.
