Boeing B-314 / B-314A Clipper — Primary-Source Technical Documentation
This living collection consolidates the largest known digital assembly of surviving original technical documentation for the Boeing B-314 and B-314A Pan American Clipper — the most sophisticated commercial flying boat of its era, cleared for scheduled oceanic service by the Civil Aeronautics Board on 26 January 1939.
Twelve hulls were produced. No two were identical.
Understanding What This Collection Contains — and What It Does Not
These are original factory engineering documents, operational manuals, and manufacturer reference publications — not reconstructed data, not simplified guides, not flight simulator add-ons.
They assume professional-level technical reading ability: tolerance specifications, ATA chapter structure, assembly sequences, and manufacturing references. Surviving documentation for the B-314 is extremely sparse. Boeing donated their file to the Smithsonian; what survived amounts to fragments. This collection represents the deepest known digital consolidation of that surviving primary-source layer.

Airframe Architecture
- Wing profile inherited directly from the experimental Boeing XB-15; high-mounted cantilever configuration
- Wing section thick enough to contain an internal structural walkway — flight engineers serviced engines (spark plug changes, fuel leak patches) in flight over oceanic legs
- Water stability sponsons replaced conventional underwing floats; engineered to generate supplemental lift in flight and serve as passenger boarding platforms on water
- First functional wide-body transport hull at 150 inches — a dimension not exceeded by Boeing until the 1969 debut of the 747
Handling & Stability
- Early June 1938 test flights revealed severe directional instability; single-fin tail replaced with twin fins, then restored to a signature three-fin unit
- Rudders mounted exclusively on the two outer side fins; spring-tab architecture on elevators and rudders for proportional aerodynamic feel
- 85% counterweight-balanced elevators for predictable pitch control during heavy water takeoff rotations
