BMW 801 Aircraft Engine — Technical Manuals Collection
A curated archival collection of original technical documentation for the BMW 801 radial aircraft engine, covering variants A, B, C, D, G, Ma, Ml, Mg. This living collection comprises 6 unique documents organized into two variant folders for convenient access.
About the BMW 801
First introduced in 1940 (prototype runs from April 1939), the BMW 801 was designed by BMW (Bayerische Motoren Werke), evolving from the BMW 139 and rooted in earlier Pratt & Whitney Hornet engines built under license. A 14-cylinder, twin-row radial engine with 41.8 litres (2,550 cu in) displacement, it produced between 1,540 and 2,000 hp depending on variant and boost settings.
Over 61,000 units were produced between 1940 and 1945, powering some of the most formidable aircraft of the Second World War: the Focke-Wulf Fw 190, Junkers Ju 88, Dornier Do 217, and Junkers Ju 188. Its most celebrated engineering feature — the Kommandogerät — was an early mechanical-hydraulic analog computer that managed fuel flow, propeller pitch, mixture, and ignition through a single throttle lever.
Today, the BMW 801 survives in only a handful of airworthy restorations, including a notable Focke-Wulf Fw 190 A-5 at the Flying Heritage & Combat Armor Museum. It remains a landmark achievement in wartime aero-engineering.
