Comprehensive Beechcraft Bonanza Family Aircraft Documentation

Access the comprehensive technical library for one of the most iconic and successful aircraft families in general aviation history. This digital collection includes flight manuals, maintenance documentation, parts catalogs, and wiring diagrams for the Beechcraft Model 33, 35, and 36 Bonanza, Debonair, and the military QU-22B variant, representing over seven decades of excellence in single-engine design.

Historical Significance

The Beechcraft Bonanza, first flown in December 1945, revolutionized personal aviation and became the benchmark against which all other single-engine aircraft are measured. Designed by a team led by Ralph Harmon, the original Model 35 Bonanza featured an innovative all-metal construction, retractable landing gear, and a distinctive V-tail configuration that became one of the most recognizable silhouettes in aviation. The Bonanza was the first small aircraft designed specifically for the private owner rather than military or commercial use.

The Model 35 Bonanza, produced from 1947 to 1982, became legendary for its distinctive V-tail (or "butterfly tail") design that combined the functions of horizontal stabilizer and vertical fin into two surfaces set at a 33-degree angle. Over 10,000 V-tail Bonanzas were built across numerous variants (A35 through V35B), making it one of the longest-running aircraft production programs in history. The V-tail configuration reduced drag and weight while providing excellent handling characteristics and a sleek, modern appearance.

The Model 33 Debonair, introduced in 1960, featured a conventional tail configuration and was initially marketed as a more economical alternative to the V-tail Bonanza. In 1968, the Debonair name was dropped and the aircraft was redesignated as the Model 33 Bonanza, acknowledging that it shared the same quality and performance as its V-tail sibling. The straight-tail Bonanza appealed to pilots who preferred conventional handling characteristics and remains in production today as the G36.

The Model 36 Bonanza, introduced in 1968, featured a stretched fuselage with six seats and a conventional tail. This variant became extremely popular for its combination of performance, comfort, and utility, offering true six-passenger capability with club seating and a large cargo door. The Model 36 remains in production today, making the Bonanza family one of the longest continuously produced aircraft in aviation history—over 75 years and counting.

The QU-22B represented a unique military application of the Bonanza. During the Vietnam War, the U.S. Air Force modified Model 36 Bonanzas into unmanned surveillance aircraft for the Pave Eagle program. These aircraft, designated QU-22B, were equipped with acoustic sensors and relay equipment to detect enemy troop movements along the Ho Chi Minh Trail. While initially designed for unmanned operation, most QU-22Bs were actually flown by pilots due to technical challenges with autonomous flight. The program operated from 1968 to 1972, demonstrating the Bonanza's adaptability to specialized military missions.

Powered by Continental IO-470, IO-520, or IO-550 engines (depending on variant) producing 225 to 300 horsepower, Bonanzas cruise at speeds up to 200 mph with ranges exceeding 1,000 miles. The aircraft's combination of speed, comfort, reliability, and handling excellence made it the preferred choice for serious private pilots and business operators. Over 17,000 Bonanzas of all models have been produced, making it the most successful high-performance single-engine aircraft in history.
