Aichi S1A Denkō — Leaderboard Banner

This Living Collection brings together primary-source technical documentation for the Aichi S1A Denkō (電光, "Bolt of Light") — factory designation AM-25 — the most massive fighter ever developed in Japan's naval history. Designed by Aichi Kokuki KK for the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) to counter B-29 Superfortress high-altitude raids, the Denkō was an experimental twin-engine night fighter of extraordinary ambition. Only two prototypes were constructed; both were destroyed by Allied bombing raids in 1945 before completion. The aircraft never flew.

This collection compiles data reconstructed from wartime design logs, the Denkō Keikaku Setsumesho (Denkō Project Explanation Manual), performance calculation sheets, and photographic records.

Aircraft & Technical Overview

Aerodynamic Architecture

The Denkō's airframe represented one of the most technically sophisticated Japanese naval fighter designs of the war:

  • Wing Profile: Modelled after Heinkel He 100-style structural blueprints, featuring a specialised laminar-flow wing section to reduce high-altitude parasitic drag.
  • Dihedral Configuration — Inner Wings: Shallow 2° 30' dihedral from fuselage to engine nacelles.
  • Dihedral Configuration — Outer Wings: Steep 6° dihedral from nacelles to clipped tips for maximum lateral stability during night interception.
  • Fuselage Architecture: Shared development cues with the Nakajima C6N1 Saiun. Exceptionally thick metal skin over minimal internal stringers — clean aerodynamic surface, reduced structural mass, shortened production time.
  • Airbrakes: Integrated trailing-edge mechanical airbrakes to prevent high-speed overshoots during close-in night bomber engagements.

Powerplant — Nakajima NK9K-S Homare 22

Twin Nakajima NK9K-S Homare 22 18-cylinder air-cooled radial engines driving four-bladed constant-speed metal propellers:

  • Output: 2,000 hp at takeoff — 1,885 hp at 1,750 m — 1,620 hp at 6,400 m.
  • High-Altitude Induction: Remote turbosuperchargers with auxiliary oxygen injection for performance above 8,000 m.
  • Thermal Management: Forced-cooling fans required inside tight-fitting cowlings due to chronic overheating discovered during static test runs.
  • Engineering Shortcoming: Remote turbocharger layout caused severe exhaust pressure drops; Navy performance parameters were never fully met. Proposed post-prototype upgrade to Mitsubishi MK9A Ru or MK10A Ru engines.

Handling & Stability

  • Weight Penalty: Avionics, radar gear, and heavy armour pushed combat weight beyond 10,000 kg, with projected heavy wing-loading characteristics.
  • Pilot Ergonomics: Highly forward-mounted teardrop canopy giving unobstructed view over wing leading edges.
  • Radar Operator Position: Seated separately at the wing trailing edge under a small observation dome, managing defensive systems independently.
  • Centre of Gravity: Remote dorsal turret placement between crew positions required precise fuel tank balancing in the central fuselage.
  • Defensive Tracking: Remotely controlled top turret eliminated aerodynamic buffeting and weight of a manned turret system.
