This Living Collection brings together primary-source technical documentation for the Aichi E13A "Jake" (零式一號水上偵察機一型, Type Zero Reconnaissance Seaplane Model 11) — the Imperial Japanese Navy's primary long-range, three-seat maritime reconnaissance floatplane throughout World War II. Designed by Aichi Kokuki KK, the E13A represented a decisive departure from drag-heavy biplane configurations, combining cantilever monoplane engineering with exceptional overwater endurance. A total of 1,418 units were produced.

Aerodynamic Architecture

The E13A was structured as a low-wing, twin-float cantilever monoplane — a profound departure from the biplane configurations it replaced:

  • Wing Profile: High-aspect-ratio wing, 36.0 m² (387 ft²) total area, optimising lift efficiency for long-duration overwater scouting.
  • Drag Management: Cantilever engineering eliminated all external wing bracing wires. Residual drag dominated by the twin-float assembly and its vertical strut networks.
  • Control Surfaces: All-metal stressed-skin primary structure. Ailerons, elevator, and rudder remained fabric-covered to reduce tail-heavy moments and control circuit inertia.

Handling & Stability

During 1938 IJN evaluation trials against the competing Nakajima E12A1, the Aichi prototype demonstrated clear design dominance:

  • Inherent Stability: Remarkably stable despite larger footprint and heavier gross weight than predecessors — an excellent overwater camera and bombsight platform.
  • Low-Speed Handling: Massive wing provided forgiving stall characteristics, vital for high-load water take-offs and slow low-altitude harbour approaches.
  • Combat Vulnerability: Handling envelopes completely inadequate against Allied fighter interception. Absence of armour and self-sealing fuel cells caused catastrophic system failures under fire.

  • Ventral Gun Mod: Lower fuselage floor modified to mount a downward-firing 20 mm Type 99 autocannon for low-altitude strafing of ground targets and small naval vessels.
