Aerodynamic Architecture
- Wing Configuration: Low-mounted elliptical wings inspired directly by the German Heinkel He 70 Blitz — excellent lift-to-drag characteristics and superior handling at lower flight envelopes.
- Prototype Deficiencies (1938): Severe directional instability in wide turns and high snap-roll tendency during tight banking manoeuvres.
- Aerodynamic Mitigations: Wingspan extended by 0.40 m, outer section airfoil profile altered, and a prominent dorsal fin strake added forward of the rudder to correct airflow detachment.
- Dive Brake Redesign: Original wing-mounted dive brakes induced intense structural vibrations at maximum diving speed. Resolved by replacing with reinforced multi-slotted dive brakes outboard of the main landing gear.

- Initial Mockup: Nakajima Hikari 1 nine-cylinder radial (709 hp) — proven critically underpowered for carrier operations.
- D3A1 Model 11: Mitsubishi Kinsei 43 (1,000 hp) or Kinsei 44 (1,070 hp) — 14-cylinder two-row air-cooled radial.
- D3A2 Model 22: Mitsubishi Kinsei 54 (1,300 hp) with fully redesigned aerodynamically streamlined engine cowling.

- Low-Speed Agility: Clean wing aerodynamics and light wing loading gave the Val near-fighter dogfight handling metrics once ordnance was released.
- Dive Profile: Capable of 60°–90° vertical steep-angle dives. Pilot used a Type 95 telescopic gunsight; belly window allowed visual target acquisition to the dive pivot point.
- Bomb Clearance: 250 kg central bomb fitted to a pivoting displacement trap gear (fork crutch) — mechanically swung the bomb downward and forward, clearing the propeller arc before release.

Engineering Bulletins
- Fixed Undercarriage: Navy deliberately chose fixed spatted landing gear over retractable — structural weight savings and mechanical simplicity outweighed drag penalty at operational cruising speeds.
- Vulnerability Directives: Built without self-sealing fuel tanks or pilot armour to maximise range. Later field bulletins introduced rudimentary CO₂ fire-extinguishing equipment into wing tanks, though efficacy against heavy-calibre fire remained low.
- Carrier Stowage: Only outer wingtips folded upward (rather than full wing fold) to fit standard IJN carrier elevator dimensions.
