Historical Note
The SIAI-Marchetti S.211 was designed in the late 1970s as a lightweight, low-cost jet trainer intended to bridge the gap between basic propeller training and advanced fast-jet conversion. First flown in 1981, the aircraft was developed by SIAI-Marchetti (later absorbed into Aermacchi and subsequently Leonardo/Alenia Aermacchi) as a private venture aimed at the export market. Its clean aerodynamic design — featuring a supercritical wing, semi-monocoque aluminum airframe, and tandem two-seat cockpit under a large single-piece canopy — gave it handling qualities well suited to ab initio jet training.
The Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) became the primary operator, acquiring a substantial fleet that served through the 1980s and 1990s. The Philippine Air Force (PAF) also adopted the type as the AS-211 Warrior, and these aircraft remain in active service as of 2026, having transitioned to maritime patrol and light attack roles following the introduction of FA-50 fighters. A small number of S.211As were developed for the US JPATS competition, fitted with the more powerful Pratt & Whitney Canada JT15D-5C engine.
Following RSAF retirement, approximately 12–15 airframes entered civilian hands, primarily in the United States and Australia. Several operate under FAA Letters of Deviation Authority (LODA) for Upset Prevention and Recovery Training (UPRT). Euro Flight Test (EFT) in Europe uses demilitarized S.211s as modular airborne sensor test platforms. The first prototype (I-SITF) and the JPATS demonstrator (I-SMTE) are preserved at the Volandia Museum in Italy.
