Historical Note
The Supermarine Spitfire Mk.IX emerged in 1942 as the RAF's answer to the formidable Focke-Wulf Fw 190, incorporating the powerful Rolls-Royce Merlin 61 series engine with two-stage supercharger. This variant became the most-produced Spitfire model, with over 5,600 aircraft manufactured between 1942 and 1945. The Mk.IX served on every front from North Africa to the Pacific, combining the refined aerodynamics of earlier marks with significantly improved high-altitude performance. Its versatility led to numerous sub-variants including low-altitude (LF), medium-altitude (F), and high-altitude (HF) configurations, each optimized for specific operational roles. Today, the Mk.IX remains one of the most sought-after warbird variants, with surviving examples prized by collectors and museums worldwide.
