About the Siemens-Halske Sh 14
Historical Background
First introduced in 1928 by Siemens & Halske, the Sh 14 evolved from the company’s earlier radial engine development and was briefly distributed in the United States as the Ryan “Yankee 7”. Produced through approximately 1944 across the Siemens, SAM, Bramo, and BMW-Bramo eras, thousands of units were built across multiple factories. It powered primary and advanced Luftwaffe trainers including the Focke-Wulf Fw 44 Stieglitz, Bücker Bü 133 Jungmeister, and Heinkel He 72, as well as the historic Focke-Wulf Fw 61 — the world’s first practical helicopter. Post-war, it continued in European aeroclubs and surviving vintage airframes.
