Powered by a Piaggio P.XI RC.40 radial engine producing 1,025 horsepower, the Falco achieved a maximum speed of 329 mph and demonstrated outstanding agility throughout the flight envelope. The aircraft's elliptical wing planform, similar to that of the Spitfire, provided excellent lift characteristics and contributed to its remarkable turning ability. Pilots praised the Re.2000's harmonious controls, good visibility, and forgiving handling—qualities that made it popular with experienced and novice pilots alike.

Despite its excellent performance and handling, the Re.2000 faced an unexpected challenge: the Regia Aeronautica initially showed limited interest in the design, preferring fighters powered by inline engines like the Macchi C.202. This decision reflected Italian military doctrine favoring streamlined inline-engine fighters, even though the Re.2000's radial engine offered advantages including better survivability (no vulnerable coolant system) and easier maintenance in field conditions.

The Falco found its greatest success in export markets. Hungary became the most enthusiastic operator, purchasing 70 Re.2000s and establishing a license production agreement that resulted in approximately 200 additional aircraft built by MÁVAG (Magyar Állami Vas-, Acél- és Gépgyárak). Hungarian pilots flew Re.2000s extensively on the Eastern Front, where the aircraft proved highly effective against Soviet fighters. Hungarian aces achieved impressive victory tallies flying the Falco, demonstrating the aircraft's combat effectiveness when properly employed.

Sweden also purchased Re.2000s (designated J 20 in Swedish service), operating them as interceptors during World War II. The Swedish Air Force appreciated the aircraft's reliability, good cold-weather performance, and excellent handling characteristics. Swedish Re.2000s served throughout the war, providing air defense for neutral Sweden and training pilots who would later transition to jet fighters.

The Regia Aeronautica eventually acquired a limited number of Re.2000s, primarily for the Italian Navy (Marina Militare) where they served as carrier-based fighters aboard Italy's aircraft carriers. These naval Falcos featured strengthened landing gear and arresting hooks for carrier operations. The aircraft also served with land-based units, particularly in the Mediterranean theater, where they conducted fighter and fighter-bomber missions.

The Re.2000's robust construction and self-sealing fuel tanks made it unusually survivable for an early-war fighter. The aircraft could absorb significant battle damage and return home—a quality that saved many pilots' lives and earned the Falco a reputation for toughness. Its wide-track landing gear provided excellent ground handling, while the radial engine's reliability proved valuable when operating from primitive airstrips.

The Falco served as the foundation for subsequent Reggiane fighters including the Re.2001 (with inline engine), Re.2002 (fighter-bomber variant), and the outstanding Re.2005 Sagittario. These developments demonstrated the soundness of the basic Re.2000 design, which proved adaptable to various powerplants and mission requirements. The Re.2000's influence extended throughout the Reggiane fighter lineage.

Production of the Re.2000 totaled approximately 170 aircraft in Italy, with an additional 200 built under license in Hungary. While these numbers were modest compared to other Italian fighters, the type's export success and excellent combat record—particularly in Hungarian service—demonstrated that the Regia Aeronautica's initial rejection was a missed opportunity. The Re.2000 proved that Italian industry could produce world-class fighters when given the chance.

Today, the Reggiane Re.2000 Falco is remembered as an excellent fighter that never received the recognition it deserved from its country of origin.
