Historical Note
The PZL TS-11 Iskra ("Spark") holds a distinguished place in aviation history as Poland's first domestically-designed and produced jet aircraft, and one of the few jet trainers developed outside the major Western and Soviet powers during the Cold War era. Designed by Tadeusz Sołtyk at the PZL-Mielec works, the Iskra first flew on February 5, 1960, representing a remarkable achievement for Polish aerospace engineering.
Developed to replace the TS-8 Bies piston trainer, the Iskra was specifically tailored to Polish Air Force requirements for an advanced jet trainer capable of preparing pilots for transition to frontline fighters like the MiG-15, MiG-17, and later MiG-21. Powered by a single SO-1 turbojet engine (a Polish development of the British HO-10 engine), the TS-11 featured a tandem cockpit, ejection seats, and docile handling characteristics ideal for training.
What made the Iskra exceptional was its longevity and export success. From 1963 to 1987, over 600 aircraft were produced, serving not only Poland but also India (where it was designated the Iskra Mk.II) and several other nations. The Polish Air Force operated the type for an extraordinary 50 years, from 1963 until final retirement in 2013, making it one of the longest-serving jet trainers in history.
The Iskra also gained international recognition through the "Biało-Czerwone Iskry" (White-Red Sparks) aerobatic team, Poland's national display team, which thrilled airshow audiences across Europe from 1969 to 1999. Beyond training, the TS-11 served in light attack and reconnaissance variants, demonstrating remarkable versatility.
Today, preserved Iskras can be found in museums worldwide, celebrated as symbols of Polish aviation achievement and Cold War-era ingenuity. The aircraft represents a proud chapter in European aerospace history and remains beloved by pilots who trained on this reliable, forgiving jet.
