Historical Note
The Mil Mi-2 (NATO: Hoplite) represents a remarkable chapter in Cold War aviation history and international aerospace cooperation. Originally designed by the Soviet Mil Moscow Helicopter Plant in the early 1960s as a turbine-powered successor to the piston-engine Mi-1, the Mi-2 became the first Soviet helicopter to be manufactured entirely outside the USSR when production was transferred to Poland's PZL-Świdnik factory in 1965.
First flown in September 1961, the Mi-2 featured twin Isotov GTD-350 turboshaft engines mounted above the cabin, providing exceptional reliability and hot-and-high performance. Its compact size, rugged construction, and versatile design made it ideal for a wide range of civilian and military roles including transport, medevac, agricultural spraying, search and rescue, training, and light attack missions.
PZL-Świdnik produced over 5,400 Mi-2 helicopters between 1965 and 1999, making it one of the most successful light helicopter programs in aviation history. The aircraft served with military and civilian operators in more than 30 countries across Eastern Europe, Asia, Africa, and Latin America. Its reliability in harsh conditions, ease of maintenance, and ability to operate from unprepared sites made it particularly popular in agricultural aviation, where specially-equipped variants performed crop dusting and spraying operations across vast territories.
During its decades of service, the Mi-2 saved countless lives in medical evacuation roles, supported agricultural development across multiple continents, trained generations of helicopter pilots, and proved itself as a workhorse in both civilian and military operations. Many Mi-2 helicopters remain in active service today, testament to the aircraft's robust design and enduring utility.
These original technical manuals represent authentic documentation produced by PZL-Świdnik (Polskie Zakłady Lotnicze) and approved by Polish and international aviation authorities. They contain the same operational procedures, maintenance instructions, parts information, and technical specifications used by mechanics, pilots, and engineers throughout the Mi-2's remarkable service history. For restorers working to preserve these historic aircraft, researchers documenting Cold War aviation technology, and enthusiasts studying this influential design, these manuals provide invaluable primary-source technical information.
