Historical Note

The Pratt & Whitney J60/JT12 had its first run on May 16, 1958, with first flight in January 1960. Originally conceived as a small turbojet for a Canadian requirement at United Aircraft of Canada (now Pratt & Whitney Canada), the program was transferred to Pratt & Whitney's East Hartford, Connecticut division for full development and production.

The engine entered service as the primary powerplant for the U.S. Navy's first production jet trainer — the North American T-2B Buckeye — and the widely used Air Force T-39 Sabreliner (C-140). On the civilian side, it became the standard engine for the first generation of dedicated corporate business jets: the Lockheed L-1329 JetStar and the North American Sabreliner. Production ran from 1960 to 1977, with approximately 2,269 units built, plus 352 JFTD12/T73 turboshaft derivatives used on the Sikorsky S-64 Skycrane.

Key variants included the JT12A-5 (J60-P-3/5/6) initial version at 2,900–3,000 lbf thrust, the JT12A-3 modified for VTOL research on the Lockheed XV-4A at 3,300 lbf, the JT12A-21 afterburning version at 4,025 lbf, and the JFTD12 (T73) turboshaft derivative. The engine's approximately 7:1 thrust-to-weight ratio was exceptional for its era.
