Historical Note:

The Fouga CM 170 Magister holds a distinguished place in aviation history as one of the world's most successful and widely-used jet trainers. Designed by French aircraft manufacturer Fouga (later Potez-Air-Fouga, then Aérospatiale), the Magister first flew on 23 July 1952 and entered service with the French Air Force in 1956.

What made the Magister revolutionary was its role as the first purpose-built jet trainer to be widely adopted internationally. Its distinctive V-tail configuration, side-by-side seating arrangement, and docile handling characteristics made it an ideal platform for transitioning pilots from piston-engine aircraft to jets. The aircraft's forgiving flight characteristics and relatively low operating costs contributed to its popularity with air forces around the world.

During its production run from 1952 to 1962, approximately 929 Magisters were built, serving with over 25 air forces across Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia, and South America. The aircraft saw extensive service as an advanced trainer, light attack aircraft, and aerobatic display platform. Notable operators included France, West Germany, Israel, Belgium, Ireland, and many others. The Israeli Air Force famously used armed Magisters in combat during the Six-Day War in 1967.

Beyond military training, the Magister gained international recognition through its use by the renowned Patrouille de France aerobatic team from 1964 to 1980, thrilling millions of spectators with precision formation flying. The aircraft's elegant lines and graceful performance made it a favorite at air shows worldwide.

Post-military service, many Magisters found new life in civilian hands, becoming popular warbirds for collectors and enthusiasts. The aircraft's reliability, relatively simple systems, and availability of parts have made it one of the most accessible vintage jets for private ownership. Today, Magisters continue to delight crowds at air shows and remain active in private collections around the world.

These original technical manuals represent authentic documentation used throughout the Magister's service life by air forces including France, Germany, and various international operators. The collection spans multiple decades of the aircraft's operational history, from early 1960s editions through updates in the 1990s, reflecting the evolution of maintenance practices, modifications, and operational procedures. For restorers working to return these elegant jets to flight, historians researching Cold War-era training programs, or enthusiasts seeking to understand every system of this iconic aircraft, this documentation provides invaluable primary-source technical information.
