The North American OV-10 Bronco holds a unique place in aviation history as a purpose-built counter-insurgency (COIN) aircraft designed specifically for forward air control, light attack, and observation missions. First flown in 1965 and entering service in 1968, the Bronco was developed in response to lessons learned from the Vietnam War, where the need for a rugged, maneuverable aircraft capable of operating from short, unprepared airstrips became critical.

Powered by twin Garrett T76 turboprop engines and featuring a distinctive twin-boom design with excellent visibility, the OV-10 could carry a wide variety of weapons while maintaining exceptional low-speed handling characteristics. Technical Overview

Design & Aerodynamic Configuration

The OV-10 Bronco was designed as a Light Armed Reconnaissance Aircraft (LARA), with aerodynamic features focused on STOL (Short Takeoff and Landing) performance, high maneuverability for close air support, and stability for observation missions. The aircraft features a straight, constant-chord, shoulder-mounted wing designed to provide high lift and stability. It has twin tail booms, a high-set tailplane for structural strength, and opposite-rotating propellers to counteract torque.

The wing incorporates double-slotted flaps, which, combined with the "washed wing" design, allow for excellent STOL performance and a short landing ground roll of 183 m (600 ft).   • Power Output: Early models (OV-10A) used the 715 hp T76-G-410/412. Later variants (OV-10D) upgraded to the 1,040 hp T76-G-420/421.
  • Engine Handing: Engines are "handed" for opposite rotation to eliminate torque-induced yaw; for example, the T76-G-6 (clockwise) and T76-G-8 (anti-clockwise) on some versions.
  • Operational Flexibility: The engines were designed to handle high-octane automobile fuel in emergencies.
