Historical Note

The North American Aviation NA-64 Yale holds a distinguished place in aviation history as one of the most successful basic training aircraft of World War II. Developed in 1939 as an evolution of the earlier BT-9 design, the Yale was specifically created to meet the urgent demand for pilot training aircraft as war clouds gathered over Europe.

Powered by the reliable Wright R-975 Whirlwind radial engine, the Yale featured a robust all-metal construction, fixed landing gear, and tandem seating configuration that made it an ideal platform for teaching fundamental flying skills. While the United States Army Air Corps selected the more powerful AT-6 Texan for its training needs, the Yale found its true calling with Allied air forces around the world.

The Royal Canadian Air Force became the Yale's primary operator, acquiring over 119 aircraft under the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan. Canadian pilots trained on the Yale learned essential skills including formation flying, navigation, aerobatics, and instrument procedures. The aircraft's forgiving handling characteristics and rugged construction made it perfect for the demanding environment of ab-initio military flight training.

Beyond Canada, the Yale served with distinction in the Royal Air Force and the Free French Air Force, where it was known by its French designation. The aircraft proved remarkably versatile, serving not only as a basic trainer but also in communications, liaison, and light transport roles throughout the war years.

Production of the NA-64 totaled approximately 400 aircraft between 1940 and 1942. After the war, many Yales found their way into civilian hands, where they became popular sport aircraft and warbird collectibles. Their reliability, relatively low operating costs, and authentic military heritage made them favorites among vintage aircraft enthusiasts.

Today, the NA-64 Yale represents an important chapter in aviation training history. These original technical manuals—the very documents used by mechanics, pilots, and instructors during the aircraft's service life—provide authentic documentation of the systems, procedures, and maintenance practices that kept these trainers flying through thousands of training hours.
