McDonnell F3H Demon — Primary-Source Technical & Engineering Archive

The McDonnell F3H Demon was the U.S. Navy's first swept-wing, carrier-based all-weather jet fighter — and one of the most technically troubled aircraft of the early Cold War era. Born from the ambition to field a supersonic fleet interceptor, the Demon's development was defined by the catastrophic failure of the Westinghouse J40 engine and the subsequent salvage operation that produced the operational F3H-2 series. This archival collection assembles six primary factory and military technical documents spanning the full F3H family, from the 1953 Combat Capability Report through the 1960 revised Illustrated Parts Breakdown.


1. Aerodynamic Configuration

  • Wing Geometry: 35° swept wing spanning 35 ft 4 in — leading-edge slats and trailing-edge flaps for carrier compliance
  • Airfoil Sections: Root — modified NACA 0006.77-1.13 32/0.77; Tip — modified NACA 0006.36-1.16 38/1.14
  • Wing Area: 519 sq. ft — geometric aspect ratio 2.41
  • Lateral Control: Upper-surface wing spoilers acting in conjunction with conventional ailerons for high-speed roll authority

2. Powerplant — J40 Failure & J71 Recovery

  • F3H-1N (J40 Era): Westinghouse J40-W-22 — under 11,000 lbs thrust with afterburner; chronic failures led to immediate fleet grounding
  • F3H-2 (J71 Era): Allison J71-A-2 turbojet — 10,200 lbs military thrust / 14,500 lbs with afterburner; single-engine layout
  • Environmental Sensitivity: Early technical notes document severe compressor flameout vulnerability in heavy rain ingestion conditions

3. Handling & Stability Studies

  • Pitch-Up Tendency: Prototypes exhibited severe high-altitude pitch-up near buffet boundaries during hard manoeuvres
  • Yaw Damping: Pulsed-tail techniques mapped yaw damping characteristics; vertical tail surface enlarged in later revisions
  • Speed-Brake Revision: Actuator redesign resolved low roll rates identified in early handling trials
  • Low-Speed Regime: High wing loading created dangerous power-curve recovery conditions on carrier approach — modified afterburner systems introduced to reduce accident rate

  • Hydraulic Subsystems: Dual utility system recurrent retrofits to resolve persistent primary control loop leaks in high-pressure lines
  • Fuel Plumbing: Self-sealing fuel bladder configurations and starboard-side inflight refuelling probe kit installation procedures
